On the dirt road of his transformation, he meets Marianna, a Romanian woman who accepts his nature. They fall in love and decide to get married, both dressed as a bride. Pino/Beatrice is both wife and husband, both father and mother to Marianna's son, whom she decides to adopt. The story of a love that unites an unconventional family, in an overly conventional country. Love enfolds a story of human beings, in Italy, who make important choices, who go “off-road”, who take different routes, bumpy roads, and reunite on the same path.

Orlando

Original title: Orlando (United Kingdom, Russia, France, Netherlands, Italy, 1992)

Director: Sally Potter

Cast: Tilda Swinton, Billy Zane, Charlotte Valandrey, Heathcote Williams, Lothaire Bluteau, Lol Coxhill

Genre: Fantasy

Plot: An English noblewoman, aged sixteen in 1600 during the reign of Elizabeth I, becomes a woman at thirty and remains so, without growing older, for the following centuries until 1928. To emphasize its relevance today, Potter extends the action until 1992. The film brings Virginia Woolf's novel (1928) to life in another dimension, interweaving many themes: history (the idea the English have of their past), sexuality, time, gender distinctions, androgyny, immortality, aristocracy, the discovery of writing, and -especially dear to the director- describing a being's identity through a multiplicity of selves.

Notes: Best Set Design nomination to Ben van Os and Jan Roelfs and Best Costume Design nomination to Sandy Powell for the 1994 Academy Awards.
