Glen or Glenda

Original title: Glen or Glenda (USA, 1953)

Director: Edward D. Wood Jr.

Cast: Edward D. Wood Jr., Dolores Fuller, Bela Lugosi

Genre: Drama, documentary

Plot: The indirect comparison of several lives and several stories. For example, the troubled and tormented story of a man who is unable to reveal to his girlfriend his habit of wearing women's underwear. The life of Patricia (Patrick at birth) who committed suicide after being arrested four times for dressing up as a woman in public. After serving time in prison, she is arrested again and decides to take her life, leaving a note asking to be buried in women's clothing. It is also the story of Glen/Glenda. The viewpoint is that of those gravitating around them: policemen, journalists, doctors and, above all, the “scientist”, the narrating voice of these lives.

Notes: Wood offers a very personal reflection on the theme of diversity using the expedient of documentary fiction. He was inspired not only by his own life, but by the story of George-Christina Jorgensen, one of the first men to have transitioned in the Fifties.

Grey's Anatomy (TV Series)

Original title: Grey's Anatomy (USA, 2005- in production(eighteen seasons))

Designed: Shonda Rhimes

Director: Debbie Allen

Cast: Ellen Pompeo, Scott Speedman, Alex Blue Davis, Benjamin Warren

Genre: Drama, sentimental, medical

Plot: “I am a proud trans man, Dr. Bailey. I like people to get to know me before they find out my medical history.” Big revolution in the TV series Grey's Anatomy: in season 14, there arrives Dr. Casey Parker, a transgender medical resident. The character enters the plot in a truly overwhelming and positive way, and manages to save the hospital from a hacker attack that would have endangered the lives of patients and the entire structure.

Notes: “Trans people for years have been represented as punchlines, victims and villains and not as whole people, and I was not aware of that until I went through the experience of my friend’s son disclosing that he was transgender,” said Krista Vernoff, Grey’s Anatomy’s screenwriter.
